AI History 1890–2090 is an immersive installation that imagines a world in which artificial intelligence has existed since the 1890s.
Inside a cylindrical environment, visitors encounter a panoramic chronology extending from the nineteenth century into the future. Through AI-generated images arranged in chronological order, the work presents a speculative history told from the perspective of AI itself.
The images resemble historical records and fragments of collective memory. Generated through artificial intelligence, they depict events and pasts that never existed, and whose truth cannot be guaranteed. Their authenticity remains unknowable not only to viewers, but also to the systems through which they are produced.
Rather than asking whether artificial intelligence can understand history, the work explores what happens when machines begin to narrate their own past, and when humans start to experience these synthetic narratives as history itself.
Museums, archives and documentaries have long functioned as technologies for organizing memory and producing authority. Artificial intelligence introduces a new actor into this process. As synthetic images increasingly participate in the construction of cultural memory, the boundaries between documentation and imagination, and between historical truth and fiction, become unstable.
By imagining a history in which AI has always existed, AI History 1890–2090 does not simply speculate about the past. It questions how histories are constructed, who has the authority to tell them, and how our relationship with memory, history and technological mediation may be redefined in the age of artificial intelligence.
